| information and procedure for a remote session |
| general procedure:
~ what I need ~ all I will usually need is a stereo mix of the song. if I will be replacing anything, for instance, an existing scratch guitar track...I would like that on a separate file. most importantly, make sure all files are continuous and zeroed out to the absolute beginning of your session. if you are unsure what I mean about that contact me, or have the engineer contact me. I prefer .wav files, however a good quality mp3 will suffice (mp3's can trim a few samples and make lining up / phase an issue). I also prefer having a vocal track (even if it's scratch) if possible. if all you need is some fills, solo or textural stuff over the existing track, a stereo mix will be perfect. in some instances I may ask for a click track, if one exists. also, if there is a "count in" to the song (on drums or click track...), please leave it in the mix. not only for the obvious reasons, but I will also paste it onto the beginning of each track I send back to you as a second / back up method to lining up or syncing my files with your session. if you are sending me files for multiple songs, please keep them in separate folders and clearly labeled. you can get me files by mailing or dropping off a CD / DVD or by computer via ftp, or email (mp3's only). I have a gmail account set up to receive the larger mp3's. I also have a small ftp server on a separate machine that you can upload files to. transfer rate is not blazing, but not terrible. ~ what I need to know ~ no matter what format / quality the file you send me are, I will create my session and in turn, give you my tracks in the best format for your needs. I can do up to 24 bit and 96 kHz sample rate. Let me know what bit rate / sample rate and file type you would like my files to be. I tend to record with effects, however, only when they are integral to the tone or the part. I use mic'ed amps and effects in the signal chain or outboard gear primarily. I can send you a "direct/unprocessed" track if you wish to use that for your own reamping or software modeling. please let me know in advance if you want that. If I do have an idea for processing or editing a track, I will always send a raw, unedited version you can do with as you please. if I think it may be usable, I will double tracks, if you want specific parts doubled, tripled or more, let me know. I WILL ORGANIZE AND LABEL EVERYTHING I SEND YOU CLEARLY. I always welcome input from the artist and/or producer. if there is a specific sound or general direction you want, feel free to let me know. or conversely, if there is something you don't want, I'd like to hear about that, too. if you are unsure or open to what ever, I can send you a few rough ideas for your input / approval via mp3 during the process. if the artist / producer would like to be present while I track, that is possible also. a list of gear used is also available upon request. for getting my track back to you, if there are only a few tracks, I can post them on my ftp for you to download. otherwise, I will mail (or you can pick up) a CD or DVD. even if you retrieve them from the ftp, I will mail you a CD as a solid back up. I take great care in recording and maintaining / delivery of the files. |
